With the rising cost of power in this current economic crisis and the environmental toll it takes on the earth people are starting to look at DIY Solar Power as a real alternative. It makes sense to turn to a more natural, cheaper sustainable source to fulfill our energy needs. What could be more natural than harvesting the energy given of by the sun?.
Residential solar power has been with us for decades now, but the price of installation (often driving up into the thousands of dollars) has been prohibitive for the average householder to consider homemade solar energy as… Continue reading
During the week of June 21, 2010, I had a photovoltaic solar system installed at my home in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. The installation took place over two days, with the panels installed the first day and the electrical connections completed the second day. The system consists of 18 235-Watt panels, and each panel has a dedicated inverter installed under the solar panel. As you can see, the crews were fast, neat and professional. I gave a lecture with very detailed information about the cost and savings with this system. It’s on video, and you can watch it… Continue reading

A solar panel is a sizable flat, rectangular shape, usually somewhere between the size of a radiator and a door. Solar panels are made from individual solar collectors that are covered with a protective sheet of glass. Bluish-black in color, each cell is about the size of the palm of an adult’s hand, and is generally octagonal in shape. Simillar to the cells in a battery, these cells are intended to produce electricity. However, instead of developing electricity from chemicals as battery cells do, solar cells use the sun’s rays. Photovoltaic is another name for solar cells… Continue reading
