  1. Thanks for the vid. I have both solar and wind and see the benefits of both. My 5kW solar array produces: ~7,500 kWh's/yr and my 2.4kW wind turbine produces: ~2,400 kWh's/yr. In my area of Arizona, solar out-produces wind but only slightly, per Watt but in many areas, as you mentioned, wind out-performs solar, especially in high overcast areas. We charge our EV with our wind and solar, which is great to fuel from your own power generation.

  2. I love off grid with a 5k solar array. I have tried 2 different types of wind generators. The old school brush type way out performed all the PMA junk. That said The wind in my area was not worth the cost at all. In my opinion unless you have a tower of 130' and have a minimum of a 5k Bergy solar is a much better investment. I have read many articles that say a hybrid solar/wind system is best for off grid. This is only true if you have done a long term wind study in your area. Right now I can buy solar for $.49 cents a watt. A 500 watt wind generator, tower and controller is over $2 bucks a watt. And it will not ever pay for itself. Don't get me wrong I would love to have a functional wind generator but the truth of a wind generator is do a study in your area and then go big or go home.

  3. hello, i have 2 wind turbines, can they be connected to one controller? I have 400w and 500w 12/24v wind turbines, and controller is 960w 12/24 auto. Inverter is 1000w.. So do i need just connect both wind turbine 3×2 cables to 3 terminals of the controller or i need separate controller for that? Thanks

  4. It's good to have solar & wind turbine, imaging, having 345 watt solar panel x 5 hours a day = 1.7KW
    While a wind turbine(1.5KW) can do it each hour to get 1.5KW x 24 = 36KW, but not every day is good wind, but it's good to have it, wind is 24 hours(when available), solar only 5 to 8 hours a day.. a good wind turbine you need a good galvanized tower 90ft to get 75% effective, 30ft or less is wasted money…

    good solar system is 5KW with a 1.5KW wind turbine,(depend of the size of the house)..

  5. living on the west coast of BC the wind turbine is practically useless.. you need a MINIMUM of 8-10 MPH wind.. the one I had says it produces 40 KWH per month (that's 1.3 KWH a day).. in reality it did not produce 40 KWH in a year.. if you plan on using this piece of equipment you should look at you local weather network and see what your average wind speed and duration is or you will waste every dollar you spend on it…

    turbines are fun , but quiet blades are a plus, and any turbine that genuinely performs in low winds will = more consistant power output instead of being an ornament for most of the time , no point buying turbines that need a tornado to reach its rated power or have unrealistic ratings.
    low wind low rpm turbines are my personal favourite , they do perform in higher winds but are furled for overspeed protection yet still make decent power.

  7. We have talked about things before and thank you for your videos and knowledge!!!! I do appreciate it! So my take on all the solar and wind turbine stuff is that I need electric when our power goes out! Our town Owego, New York, made the national news in 2011 when we had a serious flood and though I don't live directly in town I was without power for 72 hours and being my other half and I are disabled, we were hit pretty hard without power! So my logic is having emergency power first, but usable power for our own personal use second, and thirdly saving some money for our energy needs as well! Of course we are stuck in a trailer park too, so we don't have the space for a large solar array even though our home runs on a 50 amp service! So in general I want to set up a small wind turbine combined with a number of solar panels, in an "off grid" hybrid system! My thinking is a small VAWT would be great to offset to the smaller number of solar panels I would be able to install (which currently I have enough room to install up to 10 panels roughly). But like I say we are only on a 50 amp service in a fairly old mobile home so even an "extra" 25 to 50 amps of power would greatly benefit our needs, so my system can be fairly "small" at best! The one "benefit" too in our current home is that the roof space of our buildings already faces south (for our solar array set up) so all I have to do is figure out a slight difference in the angles for declination in our area…..which isn't much I am sure! And when I build the new roof on my shed and the shed's new addition, I had the forethought of using a Gambrel style (barn style) roof on my shed to "afford me" more solar panel real estate, giving me a place to mount panels directly facing the southern sun intentionally! And with 16 feet of usable space and then another 25 feet for the awning roof I am hoping to install this summer we should have no problem mounting a larger number of solar panels in these two areas in all to start a modest array with at least 4 to 8 six volt deep cycle batteries (I am designing my system to be a 12v system too by the way) by years end! So in short the winter months are the hardest here in the north east and that is where the wind turbine would fit into the whole system as it would mainly be for those shorter days with little to no sun or used to maintain the battery bank at night when the solar panels are not producing anything to start with! So in short my logic on a wind turbine I feel is just and accurate being my own personal situation, and like I say had I still owned my own property a larger array would be in my future but currently that isn't the case with my living arrangement! But I do completely enjoy your videos and you are very knowledgeable in this and thank you again for all the help! And I will take your advisement of using a 72 cell panel into consideration very seriously! Thank you again!!!

  8. We installed a 2.8kw rated VAWT vertical​ axis machine last fall. It actually produces up to 5.5kw max on good sites. They are much safer for urban areas than most horizontal​ axis designs imho.
    Happy with it so far but vawt's get bad press for being inefficient. Its not what we are finding.

  9. I tried a DC wind turbine. Too many moving parts and stupid maintenance.(Dumb).
    Well,it was home-built and a poor design. Gotta be AC power.
    Larger is usually better: lower blade speed,less vibration.
    On my house? NO.
    It's as expensive as solar.
    IF you have wind all of the time,cool.
    Not in the city. However,if you live on a hill,maybe.
    In the outlying area is much better for restrictions to height.
    You gonna climb that thing to do maintenance? No. Swing it down.

  10. Great video! You covered a lot in three minutes. Wind turbines don't work well in gusty or turbulent wind and they generally need to be installed for a particular wind speed in mind for best performance. Some work great at 12 mph but almost stop working at 30 mph or visa versa. A steady, annoying wind is best for turbines. Most of us can get more energy from the sun without having to climb a 60 foot tower. I installed a turbine on a 60 foot tower for somebody years ago and it took a pallet of concrete to make the footing. Put's out a lot of power but it is a miserably windy spot where the wind only blows at night. Pairs well with their solar PV system.
    Off grid wind turbines also need a way to dump power if the batteries are fully charged. The turbine keeps making power and unlike Solar PV, a turbines power has to have a place to go or you have a fire real fast. Usually a water heater element that just wastes the excess power as heat. Somethings to think about.
